Nothing in the area was came into a locked dark building. Honestly didn’t even stay the night I left 45 minutes into checking in. If you like ghosts and an old building this Is the place for you
The Karsten is not a high end hotel, but if you like the vibe of an antique store, you will love this hotel. Has views of Lake Michigan and is walking distance to variety of eating and entertainment establishments.
Booked a room for the weekend and was less than impressed with our stay. The king suite I requested was not what we were given. The hotel was dingy, and unkept at best. The bed sheets did not appear to be clean nor did the towels. They were stained and questionably washed. The fridge was dirty, and the shower appeared to be uncleaned as well. The curtains in our room were falling down, and the furniture looked dated and sourced from an old antique store. Not to mention the number of creepy dolls, and trinkets placed around the hotel. The place itself had a very off-putting vibe, which is very unfortunate considering it could be a great historical spot if it was well-kept. I would not recommend staying here. Stay at your own discretion.
The historic building was great to stay in. We heard the foot steps the first night, and the music the second. Could have been our imagination of course.
This is an OLD hotel. I love old hotels. It has personality, character and it's own identity. It also has wear and tear. If you want boring corporate cookie cutter facilities, stay elsewhere. If you want a true travel experience, stay here.
The owner is very nice and will go out of his way to make sure you're stay is amazing.
The hotel has so much history inside.
Loved the decor.
I really can't stress how amazing the owner is. He made our stay. He showed us the bar which is amazing with its orginal floor and stained glass.
Very old, rundown motel. We didn't even have curtains or blinds of any kind in our room. I felt very unsafe the entire night and would never stay here again
We booked Deluxe Q lake view on arrival were given a basic Q room. It appeared housekeeping had gotten distracted when cleaning the bathroom as it was partially completed, with the tub missed (had a presumably used towel, near empty & lid removed shampoo & a used bar of soap, along with hair from assorted parts of the body.
The owner was quick to respond, noting the Expedia booking was rate coded as Basic room & immediately offered to make it right with a new room. Alex, the owner & manager has had the place for 5yrs. He takes great pride in it & is happy to exchange stories. We thoroughly enjoyed the talks.
The lobby is filled with historical info & the closed bar is a marvel. Operation is more like a BnB than hotel. Meaning, the office area is often unmanned & much is on the honor system, including the dining area where water, soda, juice, fruit, bars, cereal, breads & accompaniments were available.
The rooms vary in size & all include tubs, some jetted. I could actually envision a less is more take, removing some of the elcectic decor to really let the historical property sing. As well as hiding mini-fridges in the wardrobe or removing. I'd recommend replacing shower curtains with washable ones.
What the property lacks in luxury, it makes up in character & definitely isn't for every traveler. It's old. The front door remains locked & you're given a key for that door, as well as your room.
As for ghosts, 4am running in the hall could have been or maybe it was guests
Very interesting, old hotel. Needs a lot of work. The breakfast items were sitting out for 2 days, including the juice. Don’t eat breakfast there! The owner was very nice and accommodating although his attire and personal appearance was extremely poor. We were the only people there. Maybe the hotels lack of upkeep is why. I don’t want this hotel to see its demise because of its historic value. Not sure we’ll return. This was our 4th time there, and each time it was under new ownership and went downhill each time. Too bad
Building is very old and needs repairs. Our room was not as advertised on Expedia. We were told we’d get a room that sleeps 5 and we got a room with two queen beds. The foot of the beds were facing one another, with a small walkway between. That was the extent of the size of the room. The room wasn’t dirty per se but it was really outdated, damaged and there were cob webs everywhere .The bathroom was spacious, although there was black mold in the shower. The gentleman manning the desk was very kind and considerate but let us know that Expedia did not charge us for any additional people meaning we were expected to pay an addition $20 for each of our 3 kids when we arrived at the hotel. This place is really not somewhere I would stay again and I would not only NOT recommend it, but I would tell others to avoid it.
Just Go!
I booked a three night reservation through Expedia. I asked for a response from the hotel, but never received one.
The hotel booked us on the third floor. I told the clerk who was new I wasn’t able to climb the stairs to the third floor. He called the owner many times to find out what to do. When he finally reached the owner, the owner’s response was “Tell them to go!” but we were supposed to pay for the three nights.
It took two hours to get things settled- I had to pay for the first night. At 8:30pm we were lucky to find lodging.
Expedia did credit partly us for the trouble, but what a mess.
The hotel is old and creepy and the only way into the hotel is by having the clerk unbolt the door.
The ceiling was leaking when I checked in the bathroom toilet would not flush The continental breakfast was offered whenever management woke up And the factory next door was working overtime so I got to listen to machines running all night
The room had old thin sheer curtain, we could see into our neighbors room and vise versa(old building has rooms with a narrow way between main walls so windows are directly across from each other like just a few feet in between them) I mentioned this to owner, he wasnt too concerned but said he'd take the suggestion. Need more hooks for clothing, towels, etc and shelves or area around sink for toiletries. (Pedastal sink is outside bathroom and right in front of window where you see into other room).
