"When we got there, we walked into the room and the room was dirty. When gave us the second room, the washroom was full of mold, and the hallway smelled really bad. The guy at the front desk was behind us spraying Febreze, which looked really unprofessional."

"My wife and I stayed at The Van Buren on June 13 2026, and I cannot praise this hotel and its staff enough. On June 11 a tornado tore through Shipshewana, knocking out power to what felt like 100% of the city. It was a chaotic and stressful situation, but The Van Buren was fully prepared with a backup generator that kept the lights on and guests safe. What really made the experience unforgettable, though, was the front desk agent, Karen. Despite the emergency unfolding around the town, Karen was the absolute definition of professional, kind, courteous, and polite. Her calm demeanor and excellent customer service turned a scary weather event into a comfortable, reassuring stay. People like Karen deserve to be recognized for going above and beyond. Thank you to The Van Buren and especially to Karen—you have a customer for life!"

"First off, they gave us the wrong room. We were supposed to have a room with 2 queen beds, a pull out couch and a kitchen. They did move us to a 2 queen and pull out, but didn't adjust our bill. We had to ask for an extra towel three times, the pool was being renovated and the whole hotel was under major renovations. I understand, but it should be on their website especially the pool not opened. The room was not very clean, it needed vacuumed and the bathroom sink had a full crack inside of it. Just felt it wasn't maintained. I hope with renovations it will be better. The hotel was very loud, doors slamming and people talking in the next room. You could hear everything. We will not stay here again."

"Charming property and has character. Love that it has stores and shopping on site. Resturant staff was so friendly and did an excellent job. Breakfest could be improved to think about those who are diabetic or have dietary need that are low carbs and sugar. Especially on Sunday morning, really struggled with options. Would stay there again."

"Hotel rooms (suite) need complete renovation. Some areas of the room were new and other areas old. Breakfast area nice and many food choices. Read a review that rated this hotel 8.8 out of 10. I would rate it 6.5 out of 10. Also said it was 24 miles from South Haven but actually takes 38 minutes to get there. Not because of traffic, but route you need to take."
