"I found some nail clippings on the carpet at the side of the bed. Wall was stained with a large coffee splash. Very poor soundproofing between rooms. Rooms and bed quite small, heating didn't work so room was cold. No fridge. Breakfast was particularly poor. Watery, tasteless orange juice. Bacon tasted only of salt, sausages cheap and tasteless, stale loaf left out from one day to the next."

"Clean room. Friendly staff (even helped me when I left my phone charger after we checked out!). Lovely area to stay at - very close to the centre. Would definitely stay again and hugely recommend the Holmwood House Hotel. "

"Good all round hotel. Bed comfortable, spacious room, very clean throughout, reasonable prices at bar, well cooked and presented breakfast. Only negatives, no fresh fruit for breakfast, only grapefruit, very small TVand biggest radiator in our room wasn’t working but this wasn’t a major issue for us but it would be in winter. "

"Convenient location bed and pillows quite hard, little things like one of our towels had a hole in it let the place down a little. Breakfast was a bit disappointing. I was greeted and seated by a nice member of the team but after that nobody came anywhere near me so i couldnt ask for coffee or fresh eggs as i had hoped so stuck with some toast and apple juice. Hot food looked ok "

"Very disappointed with our stay at The New Holgate Hotel (27 Feb – 1 Mar 2026). My son bought a Saturday night Double Deluxe room as a gift (£149). I phoned to add Friday and was quoted £128 with free parking for my husband’s disability badge. A manager later rang and promised to match the original price. On arrival we were charged £210 for the extra night with an abrupt reception response and no explanation. Total came to ~£350 instead of the expected ~£270. Despite knowing about the disability...

"Had a good 2 night stay at The Pavilion. Lovely character manor house kind of property. All staff (even though quite young) were friendly and efficient. Good location as could hop on a bus into the city. Parking (payable) at the hotel or park on street free if any spare spaces. Rooms were ok/fine, had to move from 1st one as towel rail and also toilet roll holder were both hanging off the walls. They upgraded us for free to king room. This was a good size although carpet showing slight signs...

"We were pleasantly surprised with this hotel. The staff were so friendly especially Donny at reception. Front of house can really make or spoil a stay. The rooms were spacious and they accommodated all our guests with rooms close to one another which made it much more relaxed for us. Parking was also included and breakfast which had a variety of options. Would stay here again for sure. "

"Lovely hotel, we had the Orange cottage and breakfast was worth every extra penny. Parking was steep at £15 but overall enjoyable stay"

"A picture can tell a thousand lies. The staff were cold and non committal. The room was worn and had an odour. I paid extra for a balcony and had a view of a parking lot and a dumpster(skip). Definitely not worth the money. I also had to pay £15 for the parking. There are far better options in York "

"Proper opening windows when they are next replaced would be a great idea. Meeting rooms 1-4 are far to small and many more are needed. "
