The area we started in was very touristy. While it was easy to walk around, the food was only ok and is expensive. We rented a car and went north and south and both areas were really nice and quaint. Recommend doing something similar

Its Hawaii, beautiful weather and lots to do. Kailua-Kona not without its problem of vagrants and loud road noise and vacant buildings but overall still would recommend as a great get-away in the winter.

Lots of different food establishments. The Journey Cafe has the best mac-nut ice cream that is dairy free! The only dislike is that downtown parking fees are outrageously costly. Otherwise, the town is conveniently located and accessible.

Kailua is a laid back town with limited entertainment after 9 pm. It is fairly easy to walk most of the town so I rental car is needed only to travel the island.
