Take the kids for a swim or eat the local cuisine while you relax on the sandy shores of this picturesque beach.

A favourite beach for the local residents of Cancun, this tranquil stretch of coast retains much of Cancun’s pre-tourism charm. Relax in the sun on Playa Langosta’s warm sand, or join locals as they jump from the pier. Playa Langosta is steadily attracting more foreign visitors and is home to a number of excellent bars and restaurants. The water is safe and shallow, and as the beach gets few waves, it is an excellent spot for families.

On arrival, grab a cold drink from a street vendor and then stretch out your towel and relax. Choose a quiet, shaded spot at the far end of the beach, or immerse yourself in the hustle and bustle of the locals around the wharf. This is an excellent opportunity to enjoy Mexican-style beach culture, and to share a joke with the laid-back locals.

The Caribbean waters here are calm and shallow, and remain warm year round. Playa Langosta is one of Cancun’s most family friendly beaches, as there are few boats and even fewer waves, meaning that even the youngest of children will have a great time splashing around. Jump on a ferry to the docks of the Dolphin Disovery theme park on Isla Mujeres for a chance to swim with dolphins.

When it is time for lunch, visit one of the many bars and traditional Mexican restaurants that line the foreshore. As the sun sets over Cancun, order up a cocktail and sample the freshly caught local seafood.

Playa Langosta is situated on Boulevard Kukulkan, approximately four miles (six kilometres) from downtown Cancun. It is best reached by bus or taxi, and paid parking is available at the dock. As the beach is public, it is open all hours, and there is no entrance fee. Playa Langosta, like most beaches in Cancun, is best visited midweek to avoid the crowds.
