"Everything about this property was delightful, the warm welcome, the service throughout my stay, the food and the ambience. Sometimes as a single traveller I feel as though I am not entirely welcome but certainly that was not the case at the Black Horse. Lovely, efficient but friendly staff and everywhere spotlessly clean. Traditional country pub with tasteful updates"

OYO White Bear at Bedale

"Tried to contact hotels .com Booked YOWB to stay with my elderly mother aged 88 yrs . We booked it on the 30th May as we were at a wedding at Kirklington that day . I phoned the White Bear to say we wouldn’t be there until 4 pm ish but was told to contact the Green Dragon which I thought was slightly odd and also to check in via the Green Dragon . On arrival to Bedale I had to find a disabled parking spot near to the Green Dragon and told my mother to stay in the car whilst I checked in . They gave me the Keys and told me I needed to drive down to the white Bear and let myself in through the side entrance . I drove down to park as close as I could to the white bear . I had two cabin bags and my mother using a tripod . I noticed the pub itself looked abandoned and had obviously been closed for some considerably long time . I used the key to get through the side entrance where I was met with post laying on the floor also no one there to greet us . I told my mum to stay where she was as I went up the steep steps to investigate. All the bedroom doors were unlocked and could help myself to any bedroom . We were the only people there and immediately felt unsafe as the pub downstairs was abandoned , what would happen if there was a fire etc ? Who might be able to get in . I locked up and got my mum back into the car and drove back to the Green Dragon . I told them how unhappy I was and they didn’t seem surprised. We then had to drive all the way back to Leeds ."

"Lovely village pub and little room perfectly suited our needs for a quick overnight stay with very nice and very reasonably priced food. Staff very helpful but simply couldn’t resolve room lack of WiFi which also meant TV options restricted. Breakfast a little lacking - would suggest continental may include croissant or similar. That said….for what we needed it mostly met our needs."

"I was a walker arriving at the Nag's Head at 15.30. I was warmly received and shown to my very comfortable room. Although the restaurant was closed on a Tuesday evening, i was provided with a wonderful Chinese meal at a very modest cost. I requested a continental breakfast which was fine. Pick Hill is a lovely small village with a long history, some of which is displayed in the ancient church. "

"Room was in good condition however it was a disabled room that was not advised on booking. There was an intermittent unpleasant smell coming from the bathroom. Seeing the disabled room I immediately requested a room change but here was not much enthusiasm as we had a 2 night stay and was told the hotel was full the following night so not much they could do and on the first night there were currently no other made up rooms. Overall the staff at the bar and in the restaurant and around the hotel were very good however breakfast on Sunday morning left a lot to be desired in terms of service as anything cooked took an age to arrive and my wife after at least half an hour gave up on hers but it did arrive as we were leaving! The grounds and facilities are excellent. On departure I was clear to my complaint on the room, I was offered a token without any any investigation and offered access to speak with the deputy manager. I declined both and hoped it would have been dealt with differently as my point was not financial and being fobbed off with £50 and having to request the manager did not feel right. My intention was to convey disappointment with the room in the hope of investigation and recognition to a problem with some assurance it would not remain an issue for others. I left feeling no one really cared! "
